The Life Dress

08/11/2011 - 10:00

The Life Dress, designed by Elisabeth Fuller, is based on running the algorithm The Game of Life by John Conway. Through the use of small LED screens embedded in a dragon skin silicone fabric, tiles are linked together in a grid formation to construct what is, in effect, a platform for dynamic patterns, animations, and interactive displays. The dress depicts the symbiotic relationships of living organisms and this is reflected in the life and death cycle of the LED's that are born, survive or die according to their relationship to other cells - a lone cell cannot survive by itself.

You can view this and other pieces at I/O/I. The Senses of Machines, an extremely interesting exhibition about our relationship with technology and how it changes our lives.
